Devils Defeat Cougars for First Win of Season
The University of the Sciences Women's Tennis Team earned their first win of the 2010 fall season on Saturday, defeating host Caldwell College 6-3 in Caldwell, New Jersey.
The Devils improve to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Cougars also have identical 1-1 overall and conference records.
Sciences started the match off with an immediate 2-0 advantage, earning points for default wins at #6 singles and #3 doubles. The Devils extended that lead to 4-0 with a sweep of the two remaining doubles matches. Sara Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) and Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) defeated Sara Wilkins and Danielle Levasseur 8-2 at the number one doubles slot while Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.) and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North/New City, N.Y.) won a hard-fought battle at #2 doubles, 9-7 over Olga Ndhlovu and Elizabeth Odell.
In singles competition, the Cougars earned wins at the number one and number two positions before Sciences Desiree Vassalotti (Sacred Heart HS/Vineland, N.J.) gave the Devils their fifth point with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kiera Tims at the number five singles position. The two teams split the remaining two singles matches with Jones defeating Levasseur at #4 singles and Hasan falling to Odell at the #3 slot, 8-6. Durham and Frymoyer had the other two singles defeats with Durham losing a tough split-set match at #1 singles to Wilkins 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9) and Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) falling to Ndhlovu 7-5, 6-2 at #2 singles.
USciences returns to action on Tuesday, February 14, 2010 when they host Philadelphia University at the Bergman Courts at McNeil Field. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
