Clippers Sweep Match From Devils

The University of the Sciences women's tennis team provided little resistance for the first-place Concordia College Clippers Tuesday afternoon as they defeated the Devils 9-0 in Philadelphia.

The Devils fall to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matches.  The Clippers conclude conference play with their second consecutive perfect season, upping their record to 8-0 in the league and 9-0 overall.

The Devils three doubles teams won all of five games against the Clipper juggernaut, with all five coming in the #3 doubles match as Laney Jones and Juliet Choi fell 8-5 to Camilla Xavier and Isobel Culaba.  The match was tied at 5-5 before Culaba and Xavier swept the final three games.

In singles competition, Sciences won just seven games in the six singles contests.  Ola Roberts defeated Sara Durham at #1 singles, 6-0, 6-1 while Jones won two games against Maria Ortiz at #4 singles, but dropped the match 6-2, 6-0.   Desiree Vassalotti won three games in an 8-3 pro-set loss to Adeline Brennan, the only American player on the Concordia squad, at #5 singles.  Choi lost at #6 singles 8-1 to Ana S. O Mendes.

The Devils conclude the fall portion of their season on Friday, October 15, 2010 with their final conference match against second-place Goldey Beacom College.   First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Bergman Courts at McNeil Field.
