Devils Fall to Tigers in Season Opener
The University of the Sciences women's tennis team opened their 2010-11 season on a low note on Wednesday, losing their season opener to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Holy Family University 8-1 in northeast Philadelphia.
The Devils are now 0-1 overall and in CACC matches.
Sciences lone point in the match came at #6 singles as Desiree Vassalotti ( Sacred Heart HS/Vineland, N.J.) earned an 8-3 pro-set win over Katie Cook.
The Tigers opened the match with a sweep of the three doubles contests. The number three doubles was the closest match of the day as senior Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) and sophomore Michelle Adamczyk (Nazareth Academy/Bensalem, Pa.) lost to Linda Piecyk and Katie Cook by a score of 9-7. In the other doubles matches, senior Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) and sophomore Sara Durham ( Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.) lost to Jin Querubin and Juliana Victoria 8-3 at the #1 doubles position and Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.) and Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.) dropped their #2 doubles match to Maja Patelic and Chelsea Brown 8-1.
In the remaining five singles contests, the Devils top four players all lost in straight sets. Durham was defeated by Querubin 6-0, 6-3 at #1 singles while Frymoyer lost to victoria 6-1, 6-0 at the #2 slot. Hasan was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Pantelic at the #3 singles position and Jones slipped at the #4 spot, losing to Piecyk, 6-2, 6-3. Brown and Cook completed the sweep for the Tigers in the final two singles slots. Brown rounded out the Holy Family winners with an 8-1 victory over Choi at #5 singles
The Devils return to action on Saturday, September 11, 2010 when they face Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey for the second consecutive CACC contest.
