Devils Rally to Defeat Spartans for Second Win of the Season

The University of the Sciences women's tennis team rallied from a 3-0 deficit, capturing five of six singles matches as they defeated host Saint Thomas Aquinas college 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the Match Point Indoor Tennis Center in Orangeburg, New York.

The Devils improve to 2-0 with the win, their first 2-0 start since 2007.  The Spartans fall to 0-2.

Sciences was flat out of the gate as the Spartans recorded a sweep in all three doubles matches, losing by scores of 8-3, 8-3 and 8-2.

The Devils first points of the match came on an unfortunate break for the Spartans as Raven DeLeon suffered an injury during her #3 singles match with Anna Vo (Souderton HS/Harleysville, Pa.) and had to default.  Victoria Quang (Bel Air HS/Forest Hill, Md.) closed the deficit to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nyenyeri Kanefu at #1 singles.  Freshman Sara Skoritowski (West Scranton HS/Scranton, Pa.) then tied the match at 3-3, earning her first collegiate singles win, a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) triumph over Nasin Vega at #6 singles.

STAC regained the lead as Shannon Biehle defeated Melissa White (Clearview Regional HS/Mullica Hill, N.J.) 7-5, 6-3 at #4 singles.  Teresa Alvarez-Moreno (York HS/Yorktown, Va.) tied the match at 4-4 with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Bianca Signore at #2 singles.  In the final match of the day, Andria Dang (Central HS/Philadelphia, Pa.) lost the first set of her #5 singles match with Samantha D'Andrea before rallying to take the next two and earn a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win and give the Devils their second consecutive victory.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 when they travel to face Caldwell College in their CACC opener.
