Philadelphia University handed the University of the Sciences women's tennis team their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating the Devils 8-1 at the McNeil field courts on the USciences campus.
The Devils fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Rams improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league play.
Sciences' lone point of the match came in doubles play as the Devils #1 doubles team of Victoria Quang (Bel Air HS/Forest Hill, Md.) and Teresa Alvarez-Moreno (York HS/Yorktown, Va.) defeated Julia Arruda and Olivia Amato 8-4. The win made the score 2-1 at the time as the two teams headed into singles play.
Philadelphia proceeded to sweep all six singles contests in straight sets to finalize their 8-1 win. The closest singles contest came at #1 singles where Quang, after dropping the first set 6-0 to Arruda, rallied with a hard fought second set before losing 7-5. Arruda's 6-0, 7-5 win was the Rams fifth point of the match, thus securing the overall win.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, September 20, 2014 when they host Molloy College in a regional clash at the McNeil Field courts. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
