Make it three straight wins for the University of the Sciences women's tennis team as they swept a pair of matches from Cheyney University Sunday afternoon, 9-0 and 9-0 at the McNeil Field Courts in Philadelphia.
The two wins up the Devils record to 6-1 overall. Cheyney falls to 0-3. Their 6-1 record marks their best start to a season since the team recorded a 7-1 mark to open the 2007 campaign.
In the opening match, the Devils swept all three doubles contests by identical 8-0 scores. Melissa White (Clearview Regional HS/Mullica Hill, N.J.) and Teresa Alvarez-Moreno (York HS/Yorktown, Va.) were the first tandem to finish, defeating C.T. Shelton and Jessica LaRoda at the #2 doubles position. Anna Vo (Souderton HS/Harleysville, Pa.) and Allison Korn (Sterling HS/Laurel Springs, N.J.)followed with a win over Erica Kellum and Destiny Jackson at #3 doubles and Victoria Quang (Bel Air HS/Forest Hill, Md.) and Andria Dang (Central HS/Philadelphia, Pa) combined to defeat Lachelle Miller and Taylor Billington at #1 doubles.
Moving to singles competition, Vo (#3 singles), Quang (#1 singles) and Alvarez-Moreno (#2 singles) scored 6-0, 6-0 victories over Shelton, Miller and Billington respectively, clinching the match. White (#4 singles), Sara Skoritowski (West Scranton HS/Scranton, Pa.) (#5 singles) and Alexus Rivas (No. Hagerstown HS/Hagerstown, Md.) (#6 singles) completed the shutout with 8-0 pro-set wins over LaRoda, Kellum and Jackson respectively.
Starting the second match after a short break, the Devils again opened with a three match sweep of the doubles, again via 8-0 scores. Alvarez-Moreno teamed up with Rivas at#2 doubles to defeat Shelton and LaRoda to put the first point on the board for Sciences. Vo and Korn again defeated Kellum and Jackson at #3 doubles and White moved up to #1 doubles to team with Quang to defeat Miller and Billington.
Quang, who improved to 5-1 on the season in singles with a win in the early match, was given a rest in the second match as Alvarez-Moreno moved up to play at #1 singles and defeated Miller 6-0, 6-0. Vo defeated Billington at #2 singles and White defeated Shelton at #3 singles. Vo and White's wins were also via 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Dang followed with an 8-0 pro-set win over Kellum at #5 singles while Skoritowski also recorded an 8-0 win, defeating LaRoda at #4 singles. Rivas completed the Devils second consecutive shutout with her second win over Jackson, 8-0 at #6 singles.
The Devils return to conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Lakewood, New Jersey to take on Georgian Court University.
