MIDDLEBURY, Conn. – On the eve of the 2017 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship, junior Abbygail Gamarnik received her second straight Top XVI Award at the CACC Women's Tennis Awards Banquet on Thursday night.
The Top XVI Award is given to the student-athlete who owns the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the finals site of the championship.
Now in her third year at University of the Sciences, Gamarnik has accumulated a near-perfect GPA of 3.987. She has two perfect 4.0 GPA semesters and also earned a perfect 4.0 GPA this past summer.
A Biology/Pre-Dental major, the junior has earned Dean's List Honors in each of her first four semesters. She was a 2016-17 Division II Athletic Directors Association (D2ADA) Academic Achievement Award recipient and was also named to the 2016 CACC All-Academic Team.
On the court this season, Gamarnik is second on USciences with seven overall singles victories while splitting her time between the second and third flight. She has also partnered with Karla Miletic for 10 doubles wins – second-most on the team – as the Devils' No. 1 pair.
Gamarnik and her teammates take on top-seed and regular season champion Goldey-Beacom in the CACC semifinals tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday's 12 p.m. final.
University of the Sciences is making its second consecutive appearance in the semifinals after having not appeared since 2007. The Devils will be looking to advance to their first final since winning the first-ever CACC Championship in 2005.
