Mobley Sets Record as Devils Sweep Golden Falcons

Lauren Mobley recorded 14 kills and set a school record for best attack  percentage in a match as the University of the Sciences women's volleyball team defeated Felician College 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) Saturday afternoon in Rutherford, N.J.

The Devils improve to 7-12 overall and 5-10 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Golden Falcons fall to 4-18 overall and 3-10 in league play.

Mobley's (Oxford Area HS/Oxford, Pa.) 14 kills came on just 19 attack attempts with only two errors for a .632 attack percentage.  This eclipses the previous record of .625 set last year by teammate Cady Rich (Shelton Area HS/Shelton, Conn.).  Lauren was a perfect 6-for-6 in the opening set and had five kills without an error in seven attempts in the final set.  Her only two errors came early in the second set and the freshman outside hitter closed out the set with three kills in her final three attempts.

Senior setter Sarah Hickman (Wilmington Christian School/Newark, Del) also set a school record for assists in a three-set match with 41, eclipsing her own mark of 36 set last season vs. Goldey-Beacom College.   Rich had a strong hitting day herself, with 12 kills and two errors in just 20 attempts (.500).  Senior Christine Puschak (Conestoga Valley HS/Leola, Pa.) added 11 kills (11-2-23, .391) while Diana Solomon (East Islip HS/East Islip, N.Y.) had 10 kills.   Sophomore libero Stacey Wooden (Pennsbury HS/Levittown, Pa.)  led all players with 14 digs.

Jenna Matesic led Felician with 12 kills while Nicole Degenhardt had 18 assists.  Amber Doran had nine digs.

The Golden Falcons held an early 5-4 lead in the opening set before a 6-2 run by the Devils reversed the deficit and put Sciences on top 10-7. Two kills each from Mobley and Puschak helped expand the lead to 16-10.  Doran added a kill for Felician to make the score 16-11 but that was as close as the hosts would get as the Devils closed out the match with a 9-4 run to win 25-15.  Mobley (6 kills) and Puschak (4 kills) had perfect attack percentage marks in the set with neither committing a single error.

Sciences held the early lead in the second set before Felician rallied to tie the score at 10-10.  With the score still tied at 11-11, a kill from Solomon and a pair of attack errors by the Golden Falcons gave the Devils some breathing room 14-11.  A kill by Sheryse Taylor (Boys and Girls HS/Brooklyn, N.Y.) later increased the Devils lead to four 18-14 and consecutive kills from Puschak gave the Devils their biggest lead of the second set, six, 23-17.  Puschak added two more kills in the final five rallies, giving the Devils a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set turned out to be the closest of the three as the Devils led early only to have the Golden Falcons tie the match at 11-11 and then take their first lead in the after scoring 10 or more points at 12-11.  Kills by Matesic and Erica Moore boosted Felician's lead to two 16-14 – their largest lead in the match.  Sciences battled back to tie the game on an attack error by Doran and an ace from Puschak.  A kill from Mobley followed and the Devils were back on top 17-16.  Felician followed with two straight points to reclaim the lead at 18-17 and still led by one 22-21 before the Devils scored the next four points to put the set in the books 25-22 and win the match 3-0.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 when they host Chestnut Hill College in a CACC southern division clash at the Bobby Morgan Arena.  First serve is 7:00 p.m.
