Devils Win First Set, but Fall to Lions in Four
The University of the Sciences women's volleyball started Wednesday night's match at the Bobby Morgan Arena against four-time defending CACC champion Georgian Court University with a decisive 25-12 win in the opening set. The Lions however battled back to win the next three (25-22, 25-16, 28-26) to take the match 3-1 and complete the season sweep against the Devils.
The Devils fall to 6-12 overall and 4-10 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matches. The Lions improved to 8-15 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Freshman Lauren Mobley had 12 kills to lead the Devils while senior Christine Puschak recorded nine and had the best attack% (.261 , 9-3-23) of any player in the match. Senior setter Sarah Hickman recorded 31 assists while Puschak added five aces. Defensively the Devils had a quartet of players with ten or more digs, led by freshman Diana Solomon's 19. Sophomore libero Stacey Wooden added 17 while Hickman and Mobley each completed a double-double with ten digs apiece. Senior Cady Rich and Puschak had three and two blocks respectively.
The Devils and the Lions both recorded a negative attack percentage in the match (more errors than kills) with the Devils hitting -.062 (34-44-162) and Georgian Court hitting -.013 (35-37-158).
The Lions were led by Amy Berry's 13 kills. Stephanie Rivera added nine kills and Karol Oliveros set up the GCU offense with 24 assists. Nicole Sparks paced the visitors with 19 digs while Cindy Aquino added 12. Rivera led all players with four blocks.
The women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, October 23, 2010 when they travel north to face Felician College in a CACC crossover match.
