Devils Snap Skid with Sweep of Lightning

Senior Sarah Hickman recorded her 2,000th career assist and Christine Puschak had 12 kills without an error as the University of the sciences women's volleyball team snapped their seven game losing streak with a  3-0 win over host Goldey-Beacom College Monday night in Wilmington, Delaware. 

The Devils swept the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-16 to improve to 6-11 overall and 4-9 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matches.   The Lightning drop to 6-15 overall and 1-12 in league play.    

Hickman (Wilmington Christian School/Newark, Del.) entered the contest 31 assists shy of becoming just the second volleyball player in school history to record 2,000 career assists and reached the milestone late in the final set.  The Newark, Delaware native finished the match with 32 and now has 2,001 for her career.  She joins Ladonna Landmesser (2,293 assists from 2004-07) as the only two volleyball players with 2000 or more career assists. 

Puschak (ConestogaValley HS/Leola, Pa.)  led all players with 12 kills and had a season-high attack percentage of .571 (12-0-21).   Her .571 hitting percentage was the highest by a Devils player this season.  Cady Rich (Shelton HS/Shelton, Conn.)  added eight kills and had four blocks.  Freshmen Lauren Mobley (Oxford area HS/Oxford, Pa.) and Diana Solomon (East Islip HS/East Islip, N.Y.) had six kills apiece.  Stacey Wooden (Pennsbury HS/Levittown, Pa.) had seven digs while Hickman added six. 

As a team the Devils recorded their highest attack% in a match since their season opener against Cheyney University, hitting .378 (38 kills, 7 errors on 82 attempts).   Sciences recorded just one attack error in the final set. 

Monica Dempsey led Goldey-Beacom with seven kills and 11 assists.  Roni Shaner added 11 digs and Rebecca Stoffer had three blocks. 

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 when they host Georgian Court University at the Bobby Morgan Arena.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.
