Solid All-Around Efforts Propels Devils to Sweep of Nyack
The University of the Sciences Women's Volleyball Team got a solid effort on both offense and defense as the defeated Nyack College, 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Bowman Gymnasium in Nyack, New York.
The Devils won the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-17. Sciences improve to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference matches. The Warriors fallto 2-7 overall and 2-5 in league play.
The host Warriors hit .125 (33 kills, 21 errors in 96 attack attempts) and had five service aces, 31 digs and three team blocks. Moana Masoniai led all players with 19 kills. Amelia Moore had ten digs and Stacia Williams had three blocks.
The Devils held leads of 10-6 and 16-12 in the first set only to see the Warriors rally back to either tie the score of pull within one in the first set. A kill by the Warriors made the score 20-19 in favor of the devils before Puschak dropped down a kill to give Sciences a two-point lead. Chrsitine then served two straight aces, got a block from Rich and Solomon and closed out the set with another ace, making the score 25-19.
The Warriors scored two of the first three points in the second set before Sciences ran off seven straight to take a 9-2 lead. The Devils never looked back as the Warriors came only as close as one before the Devils finished off the set with a 25-23 score. Rich had six kills without an error in the set.
In the third and final set, a kill by Puschak and a pair of attack errors led to the first three Sciences points as they led wire-to-wire, increasing their lead to 13-6 on a Stacey Wooden ace and later 23-14 as Solomon served six straight points, getting help with a pair of kills by fellow freshman Coral Holly along with an ace and three attack errors by the Warriors. A subsequent kill by Rich brought the contest to match point 24-16 but the Devils could not hold serve. Nyack's moore followed with an attack erro on the next rally, giving the Devils a 25-17 set win and the match 3-0.
The Devils return to action on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 with a CACC southern division match at Chestnut Hill College starting at 7:00 p.m.
