Devils Lose in Four to Wilmington

The University of the Sciences women's Volleyball Team dropped their second straight CACC match, losing to Wilmington 3-1 on Saturday in the opening contest of a tri-match at the Bobby Morgan Arena.

Sciences falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.   Wilmington improves to 4-6 overall and evens their CACC record at 1-1.   The two team split the first two sets with the Wildcats winning the opener, 25-15 and the Devils the second set 25-18.   Wilmington then took the match, winning the next two sets 25-14 and 25-23.

Lauren Mobley had a double-double with a team-high 12 kills and 22 digs.  Stacey Wooden added 30 digs for the Devils, marking her second consecutive match with 30 or more digs.  Cady Rich led all players with seven blocks (five solo).   Sarah Hickman added 30 assists setting up the Devils offense and Sheryse Taylor joined Wooden and Mobley with double figures in digs, recording 10 on the afternoon.

The Wildcats were led by Nicole Wiechecki's 13 kills and 13 digs.   Wiechecki was one of five Wilmington players to have ten or more digs, as Rhianon Graham had 14, Kim Shropshire 12 and Shannon Rumple and Brittany O'Neill had ten apiece.  Rumple and Graham had 16 assists apiece and Wiechecki had five service aces.

In the opening set, the game was tied at 7-7 until the Wildcats went on a 12-4 run to take a 19-11 lead and never looked back en route to the 25-15 win.

Mobley had five kills in the second set as the Devils opened an early 10-4 lead and held off a Wildcat rally to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-18 win.  The Devils never led in the third set, as Wilmington scored the first five points and jumped out to leads of 10-6, 16-7 and 20-8 before closing the set out with a 25-14 win.

In the fourth and final set, the Wildcats continued to maintain a lead until the Devils rallied with five straight points to take a 19-17 lead late in the contest. Still leading by three, 21-18, the Devils lost serve and the Wildcats added three more points to retake the lead 22-21.  Wilmington still led by one 24-23 when a service error by the Devils gave the visitors the win, 25-23 and the match three sets to one.

Sciences returns to action later in the afternoon against Assumption College in the final match of their weekend tri-match at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
