Devils Drop Two Matches at Home

Rachel Martin tied a career high with 13 kills but the University of the Sciences women's volleyball team remained winless on the season with a 3-1 loss to Southern Connecticut State University in the final game of Saturday's tri-match at the Bobby Morgan Arena. 

The Devils won the opening set of the match 25-22 but then dropped the next three 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20.   It marked the first time they had captured the opening set in a match this season.  USciences falls to 0-11 with the loss while Southern Connecticut improves to 9-3. 

In addition to Martin's 13 kills, Amanda DeAngelo added nine while Stacey Wooden and Diana Solomon had seven apiece.  Kaileen Bevenour had 26 assists setting up the Devils offense.   Defensively, the Devils had five players reach double figures in digs with Solomon leading the way with a season-high 19.  Bevenour added 17; Coral Holly, 14; DeAngelo 13 and Wooden 10.  DeAngelo, Martin and Sheryse Taylor each had two blocks. 

Sarah Beres led SCSU with 13 kills while Lauren McVey added 12.  McVey and Vanessa Sullivan each had 20 digs to pace the Owls. Syriah Celestine had four blocks. 

In the opening game of the tri-match, the Devils lost in straight sets to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Bloomfield College, 3-0.  The scores were 25-17, 25-13, and 25-21.  The loss puts their record in CACC matches at 0-5. 

DeAngelo led the Devils with eight kills and two blocks while Wooden had 11 digs.  Martin and Solomon each added five kills. 

Clodesh Montano had 12 kills to pace the Deacons who improved to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in league play. 

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 when the host Chestnut Hill College at the Bobby Morgan Arena.  Tip off is 7:00 p.m.
