DeAngelo Sets Kill Record as Devils Win First Match of Season

Freshman Amanda DeAngelo recorded a school record 26 kills as the University of the Sciences women's volleyball team won their first match of the season 3-2 over Chestnut Hill College Tuesday evening at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.

Chestnut Hill won the opening set 25-22 before the Devils tied the match up at 1-1 with a 25-19 win in the seconds set.  The Griffins took the third set 25-22.  USciences then took the finmal two sets 25-22 and 15-7 to win the match.

The win snaps the Devils 11-game losing streak, their third longest to start a season and ups their record to 1-11 overall and 1-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matches.   Chestnut Hill falls to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in league play.

DeAngelo's 26 kills broke the school's single match record of 23 set back in 2009 by Christine Puschak.  DeAngelo finished the match with 66 attack attempts, also a school record.  The freshman outside hitter also added 25 digs for her second double-double of the season.  Classmate Rachel Martin added 17 kills with just three errors (.424 att%) and a pair of blocks.   Sophomore Diana Solomon had 25 asssits and freshman Kaileen Bevenour added 22.  Solomon also had 13 digs and a career high eight blocks (4 solo).  Bevenour also added 1 digs.   Junior Stacey Wooden had 24 digs and sophomore Coral Holly added 15.  Sheryse Taylor had a career-high five blocks.

Alex DePalma led the Griffins with 21 kills.  She also recorded 29 digs.  Liz DiGregorio had 38 digs to lead all players.  Katie Schock added 11 kills and Sidney Chukuntarod had 41 assists and 15 digs.

In the opening set, the Devils led through two complete service rotations 18-15 before the Griffins scored three straight to tie the set at 18-18.  USciences scored four of the next six points to take a 22-20 lead before Chestnut Hill served out the set with five straight points to win 25-22.

The Griffins led 14-13 in the second set before the Devils regained the serve tying the score at 14-14 and Wooden served three straight points to boosts the hosts lead to 17-14.  Bevenour added a point off serve to boost the Devils lead to four 20-16 and DeAngelo added two more to increase the lead to six 23-17.  Chestnut Hill scored two of the next three points before the Devils' offense produced the final point to win the set 25-19.  DeAngelo and Martin had five kills apiece in the set.

In the third set, neither team led by more than three points until the Griffins opened up a 15-10 lead.  The Devils rallied to pull within one 19-18 before the Griffins started to pull away again, opening leads of 22-19 and 24-22 before winning the set 25-22.

The Devils jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the fourth set before the Griffins went on a 7-3 run to pull within two 16-14.   After regaining the serve, Martin served four straight points to give the Devils their biggest lead of the night 21-14.  Sciences still led 23-16 when the Griffins scored six straight to pull within one 23-22.  The Devils added another point when the Griffins couldn't handle Bevenour's push over the net.  Martin followed with a kill on the next rally to close out the set 25-22 and force a fifth and deciding set.  DeAngelo had eight kills in the set.

Chestnut Hill scored the first three points of the final set and looked in control.  A Wooden kill broke the string and made the score 3-1.  Two attack errors by the Griffins and kill from Martin put the Devils on top 4-3.  The Griffins regained the lead on two kills, the second by DePalma to lead 5-4 before kills from Martin and DeAngelo gave the Devils a 6-5 lead and forced a timeout by the Griffins. Two rallies later DeAngelo had a well placed kill, her 24th to set the new school record and make the score 8-5. Kills by DeAngelo on two of the next three rallies boosted the Devils margin to 10-6, forcing a second timeout by Chestnut Hill.  Two plays later the Devils led 12-6. After Chestnut Hill added another point, the Griffins had two attack attacks to make the score 14-7.  On the next rally the Griffins could not get the ball back over the net off DeAngelo's serve, giving the Devils a 15-7 win in the set and the match.  DeAngelo had four of the Devils seven kills in the set, all without an attack error.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 1, 2011 when they host Nyack College at the Bobby Morgan Arena.  Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
