Devils are Swept by Lightning in CACC Opener
The University of the Sciences women's volleyball team dropped their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Wednesday night, losing to Goldey-Beacom College 3-0 at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.
The scores of the three sets were 25-23, 25-15 and 25-15. The Devils drop to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play. The Lightning improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in CACC games.
Freshman Amanda DeAngelo led the devils with 11 kills (11-5-29, .194) while Rachel Martin added five along with a pair of service aces. Stacey Wooden had nine digs and Kaileen Bevenour dished out 22 assists setting up the Devils offense.
Kadi McCoy led the Lightning with 11 kills while Taylor Moyer added 10. Niki Receveur led all players with 14 digs. Monica Dempsey had a game-high 27 assists for Goldey-Beacom.
The Lightning scored the first three points of the match and continued to lead throughout much of the first set until the Devils tied the score at 14-14. The Lightinng ran off the next four points to take a 19-14 lead and later led 20-17 when the Devils rallied for five straight points with Martin serving to take a 22-20 lead. The freshman middle blocker had both her aces during the rally. Sciences still led by two 23-21 when the Lightinng regained the serve and Demspey served out the set for a 25-23 win.
In the second set, the Lightning jumped out to an early 12-7 and slowly pulled away as the Devils could not sustain any rally , getting just three points while controlling the serve leading to a 25-15 Lightning win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Devils fared a little better in the final set, scoring five points while serving but the result was the same, a 25-15 loss allowing the Lightning to complete the sweep. GBC broke a 5-5 tie early with an 11-2 run to take a commanding 16-7 lead. Sciences could only close the gap to six, 18-12 before the Lightning closed things out with a 7-3 run.
USciences returns to action on Saturday, September 10, 2011 when they host Bentley University and Pace University as part of a quad match with Wilmington University at the Bobby Morgan Arena. First game starts at 10 a.m.
