Devils Race to Seventh Place Finish at Philadelphia Metro Meet
Abby Kearns finished 17th overall as the University of the Sciences women's cross country team placed seventh in Saturday's 31st Annual Philadelphia Metro Cross Country Invitational Meet at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia.
The Devils scored 177 points, five behind sixth place Nyack College and 12 behind fifth place Dominican College. Philadelphia University won the team title narrowly defeating Ursinus College 79-81. Twenty-three schools had competitors in the meet.
Temperatures in the afternoon were in the high 80-degree range as Kearns, a freshman, completed the 5,000-meter course in 22:29.23 to place 17th overall. Sophomore Jordan Lyons was the second Devils to finish placing 23rd overall with a time of 22:48.18. She was followed by sophomore Kristin Waters who was 29th overall with a time of 23:24.32.
Rounding out the Devils top five were junior Kimberly Brown and senior Colleen Christian. Brown was 52nd overall with a time of 24:26.17 while Christian was 61st finishing in 24:49.24.
The Devils sixth and seventh finishers were a mere five second behind Christian with senior Alyssa Hamm finishing in 62nd place, .55 behind her teammate with a time of 24:49.79 and freshman Emily Schwartz finishing 64th with a personal-best time of 24:54.40.
Also recording a personal best time for the Devils was junior Emily Christiansen who finishing in 28:17.62.
The Devils return to action on Friday, October 2, 2010 when they will race at the Paul Short Invitational against 40 other schools, including some Division I programs.
