The University of the Sciences women's cross country team kicked off their 2015 season with a third place finish at the 15th Annual Wilmington University Cross Country Invitational at Carousel Park in Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday.
USciences finished with 56 points, 11 points behind second place Bloomfield College and 15 points behind first place Georgian Court University. Host Wilmington University was fourth with 84 points.
The Devils placed their first five finishers in the top 20 overall with freshman Regan Asay (Ridge HS/Basking Ridge, N.J.) leading the way. Asay completed the rigorous 5,000-meter course in 21:18.48 to place second overall. Right behind Asay was senior Brianna Ligotski (Holy Redeemer HS/Hanover Twp., Pa.) with a time of 21:40.07, good enough for a fourth place finish.
Senior Grace John (Council Rock North HS/Newtown, Pa.) was the third Devils runner to finish, crossing the line in 15th place overall with a time of 23:08.13. John was followed by sophomore Jessica Fraone (Oakcrest HS/Mays Landing, N.J.) in 18th place with a time of 23:30.16. Sophomore Samantha Frear (Tunkhannock HS/Factoryville, Pa.) rounded out the Devils top five finishers, placing 20th overall with a personal best time of 23:40.22.
Freshman Emily Brand (Whitehall HS/Whitehall, Pa.) was a half step behind Frear, placing 21st overall with a time of 23:40.76. Sophomore Bridget Houghton (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Newtown Square, Pa.) was 25th overall with a personal-best time of 24:23.00. Sophomore Mily Shah (Eastern HS/Voorhees, N.J.) was 26th overall with a time of 24:32.51. Junior Alyse Parker (Highland Regional HS/Clementon, N.J.) rounded out the Devils finishers, placing 41st overall with a time of 28:07.13.
The women's cross country team returns to action on Saturday, September 12, 2015 when they compete at the Philadelphia Metro Championship at Belmont Plateau.
