The University of the Sciences women?s softball team dropped two more games on Monday at McNeil Field as Dominican College handed the Devils a 3-0 loss in the opener and then proceeded to take the second game 8-5.
The losses drop the Devils record to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Chargers have now won eight straight games and improve to 14-8 overall and 8-0 in league play.
In the opener DC's Delaney Childers (9-4) limited the Devils to just three hits while striking out 12. USciences Courtney Spina (3-5) also held the Chargers scoreless for the first seven innings before giving up three runs in the eighth to take the loss.
With a scoreless tie through seven innings of play, the Lady Chargers struck for three runs in the top of the eighth. Childers led off the inning with a single and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt and came around to score on an RBI single to left field off the bat of Shelby Wassmann. Later, Ashley Martinez singled up-the-middle to score two runs and give Dominican the eventual 3-0 victory.
Janelle Rodriguez had two of the Devils three hits in the opener (a double and a triple).
In the second game, Dominican struck for two runs in the first inning as on a bases loaded walk and an RBI infield single. The Chargers added a run in the second and third inning to take a 4-0 lead before the Devils countered with three runs in the bottom of the third to pull within a run.
Infield singles by Haley Kavelak, Kerrianne Jones and Erin Summers along with a Charger infield error produced the first USciences run. Devon DeBellis then reached on a fielder's choice as Jones was out at the plate. DC's catcher Ashley Corrao then threw down to second in an attempt to get DeBellis who was gunning for the extra base on the play but her throw sailed into the outfield, allowing Summers score from third and DeBellis to race all the way around the bases to score and cut the Charger lead to 4-3.
A walk, a double and a sacrifice fly led to two more Charger runs in the top half of the fifth but the Devils got them right back in their half of the inning. Singles from Summers and Austyn Grim were followed by a one-out double by Gabrielle Adams, scoring Summers. Later, an infield error scored Grim, making the score 6-5.
Dominican added their final two runs in the seventh, one on a pinch hit single by Paige Berzak and another on a Devils outfield error.
Adams went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Summers when 2-for-4 with two runs scored to pace the Devils offense. Julie Shaw took the loss, falling to 2-6 on the season.
Kristina Pistilli (5-4) got the win for DC pitching the first five innings while Childers came in to get the save, pitching the final two innings.
The Devils are back in action on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 when they host Philadelphia University at McNeil Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
