WILMINGTON, Del. – Elizabeth Sauers repeated as champion, defending her Wilmington Invitational title by over 12 seconds on Saturday morning at Carousel Park as the University of the Sciences women's cross team opened its 2018 campaign.
The junior's third career individual title helped USciences to a third place team finish, with the Devils finishing eight points clear of fourth place Holy Family with 69.
With 44 points, host Wilmington beat out second place Felician by five.
Sauers topped the field of 42 by navigating the 5k course in 20:33.53. In addition to topping the second place finisher by over 12 seconds, she was more than 19 seconds clear of third place and over 50 seconds clear of fourth.
After missing the 2017 season due to injury, redshirt-sophomore Gabby Moss was one spot shy of returning to action with a top-10 finish as she crossed 11th with a time of 22:46.25.
Crossing one place behind her was senior Regan Asay, who clocked in at 22:53.06.
Sophomore Paige Jacobs finished in the top-half of the field in 21st after completing the course in 24:41.64.
University of the Sciences is right back in action next Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Philadelphia Metro Cross Country Championships, hosted at Belmont Plateau, with the women set to kick off the action at 12:15 p.m.
